Can I breastfeed after two years, or is it sinful?
Question:
My daughter
is now two years old and I am trying to wean her from breast feeding. I am
having some problems with not breastfeeding from her. When I deny her, she
cries and screams. Is there any specific way to stop and is it haram to breastfeed after the age of two (like 25 months)?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and
Compassionate.
May His abundant blessing and most perfect of peace be on His Beloved Prophet,
the best of creation, and his family, companions and followers.
Walaikum assalam,
According to the
majority of the scholars of the Hanafi school, it is
permitted to continue breastfeeding until two and a half years (i.e. 30
months), though the recommendation to breastfeed ends at two years. [Ibn Abidin, Radd
al-Muhtar 2.403, Bulaq
ed, quoting al-Muhit
via Quhustani’s Jami`
al-Rumuz]
It would be best
to wean her gradually, to ensure that you will be able to comfortably stop by
30 months. Consult with other mothers and relevant literature on how to do so
most effectively.
And Allah alone
gives success.
